The Hindus celebrate Maghe Sankranti on the first day of Magh. On the 1st of Magh people gather around during the day and eat meals together. People make Sesame seed laddus, molasses, ghee and other delicacies on this day. Maghe Sankranti is similar to solstice festivals in other religions. In other word, it is believed that sun move towards the Northern Hemisphere on this day. Hindus celebrate it by worshipping Lord Vishnu and taking ritual dip in the holy river Devghat, Chitwan. They chant the sacred Bhagwad Gita throughout the month worshipping Lord Vishnu.
People in the Terai also celebrate this festival, specially by the tharu community of Terai region. They celebrate Maghi by getting together and feasting and drinking during a week long festival.
